The term "colic" is often used broadly by parents to describe any fussy baby, but in pediatrics, it has a very specific definition.   2. White Noise: Turn on a loud, constant source of white noise, such as a vacuum cleaner, a running shower, or a dedicated white noise machine. The sound should be roughly as loud as the baby's cry to effectively catch their attention.
  3. Gentle Pressure: Hold your baby securely against your shoulder or lay them across your lap and gently rub their back. The gentle pressure on their stomach combined with repetitive motion can be soothing.
  4. Accept the Limit: Recognize that sometimes, despite your best efforts, the baby will continue to cry. Put on noise-canceling headphones to dull the sharp sound of the crying while you safely rock or hold them.

The structured trial

To understand where your baby is on the natural colic timeline, you need to track their behavior objectively. When you are sleep-deprived, every day feels exactly the same, making it difficult to notice subtle improvements. A structured two-week tracking trial will give you clarity.

For the next 14 days, carefully log every crying episode that lasts longer than 10 minutes. Record the start time and the end time to calculate the total daily duration. Are they hitting the three-hour mark required for the Wessel criteria?

More importantly, use this log to identify the trend. If your baby is 8 weeks old, you should start looking for a slight decrease in the total minutes per week. You might notice that while they still cry every evening, the duration drops from three hours to two and a half hours. This data proves that the natural resolution timeline is underway. If, however, you track for two weeks and the crying remains strictly above three hours a day well past the 10-week mark, this data will be crucial for your pediatrician to consider potential medical interventions rather than waiting for natural resolution.
